ভাষা প্রসঙ্গ এলেই শব্দকোষের প্রসঙ্গ চলে আসে।
সংস্কৃত ভাষায় পাঁচ লাখের বেশি শব্দ আছে। ইংরেজিতে চার লাখের বেশি শব্দ আছে। বাংলায় মাত্র সওয়া লাখ শব্দ আছে। ভারতীয় ভাষাগুলির মধ্যে বাংলায় সবচেয়ে বেশি শব্দ। তাও মাত্র সওয়া লাখ।
আর অবনত জংলি মানুষের— এখনও পৃথিবীর কোথাও কোথাও আছে— তাদের ভাষায় মাত্র সাড়ে ন’শো শব্দ।
অর্থাৎ বাঁদরের চেয়ে একটু বেশি।
উন্নত বাঁদর— যাকে উল্লুক বলি, যাদের মুখ লাল— তাদের ভাষায় শব্দ অনেক বেশি। কেঁউ, কোঁও, কেঁ— এক একটা শব্দের এক একটা মানে। তাদের জন্যে তো কেউ আর কষ্ট করে সময় নষ্ট করে কোন অভিধান তৈরি করেনি আজও।

When the language context comes, the dictionary context comes.
There are more than five lakh words in Sanskrit language. There are more than four lakh words in English. There are only one and a half lakh words in Bengali. Bengali is the most spoken word among Indian languages. That’s only a quarter of a million.
And the degraded wild people — still somewhere in the world — have only nine hundred and fifty words in their language.
That is a little more than a monkey.
Improved monkeys — whom I call apes, whose faces are red, they have a lot of words in their language. Kenw, konw, kwen etc. They have every single word has meaning one by one. No one has bothered with wastes time to make a dictionary for them even today.
